Water Ballet

Tandem Surfing at the 2012 E.C.S.C.

Two surfers perform a beautiful combination of ballet and gymnastics during the 50th anniversary of the East Coast Surfing Championships tandem surfing competition. For this particular ride, the surfer road the wave all the way to shore and walked off the board still carrying his partner. It was a site to behold and one that helped the tandem partners secure a place on the platform and in the hearts of the crowd.

So glad I was able to actually capture this image without another photographer, child or surfer walking in front of me just as I was ready to take the picture!

Summer Memories

Dreamy days.
As the days get shorter and the nights cooler, summer memories begin to fade like distant dreams.

This image of two surfer girls was taken on the beach of Hatteras, N.C. in 1978 and aptly captures the dreamlike quality of wonderful memories.

This is one of my newest surf photography prints and is available here:  Magic Markings Art

The Art of Surfing

Surf Art Photography

To answer the question - What is "Surf Art"? - I love this quote by David Bogart - "Save the fancy theories and big words for the art appreciation class. Surf art is simply art focused on the act of surfing. In my mind, if you can look at the work and it makes you want to paddle out, it's surf art, period. If you're stoked, the surf artist has successfully done his job."

These three impressionist photographs of surfers were taken along the coast of Virginia Beach and later manipulated to look like impressionist paintings on canvas.  They are part of my Coastal Color Collection, fine art photographs of beach activities captured around my city and available here.

Paddle out and stay stoked.

Summer Art Camp

Animal Love
What could be more fun than creating works of art based on the love of our furry friends?  Well, as we found out during a week of animal art,  dogs and cats can provide quite a bit of entertainment to any creative endeavor!

FOR THE LOVE OF PETS POTTERY
This weeks clay project was to hand form an animal face bowl from a slab of clay and to create garland using animal shaped cookie cutters.

Tying painted and fired animal pottery pieces onto a string of twine to create the garland.

Absolutely adorable animal face bowls - handmade and painted by camp artists.

PET PORTRAITS
Pets were also the inspiration for our painting project.  The artists used various shapes to sketch out an animal portrait onto a 16x20 inch canvas.
The portraits were outlined with a thick black sharpie and painted with many layers of acrylic paint.

FINISHED POTRAITS
 FOOTBALL ON THE BEACH
 RUNNING CAT
LAB AT THE BEACH
CAT ON A FLYING CARPET
GREEN EYED KITTY
PLAY BALL

ME AND MY PET
OIL PASTEL PORTRAITS
All this animal love was the motivating force behind our next project - the artists made a portrait of themselves holding their favorite animal.
The artists drew their portraits onto a piece of art paper, outlined the portrait, cut it out and added color with oil pastels.  The finished portraits were glued on to a 12x12 sheet of decorative paper.   A white border was created by gluing this 12x12 piece to a larger sheet of white paper.  A few shapes were cut and glued around the border for an artistic pop of color.

CUPCAKE TIME
As the week comes to a close, the artists enjoy their handmade cupcake cones out on the deck.
