Summer Art Camp

All Girl Tea Party

  ART CAMP PROJECTS:

HANDMADE CLAY CAKE

Hand drawn shape patterns applied over a slab of rolled out clay and cut out with pencils formed the foundation of the artists cake design.  Once the cake shape was created, the girls got all "cake bossy"with the left over clay that was rolled, scored, slipped and squished on top much like fondant icing.

The handmade cakes were set aside to dry then fired to a bisque ware state in my kiln.  Afterwards the girls used a pottery pencil and lead-free glaze to add color, shape, line and pattern to their clay art.

The cakes were "cooked" once again in my kiln.  To finish off their pottery pieces,  a saw tooth hanger was attached to the back.

POTTERY TEA CUPS

The artists next pottery project was to produce a teacup design on bisque ware, while keeping in mind the elements and principles of art ~ line, shape, color, pattern and harmony.

Glazed and fired the teacups were ready for our end of the week tea party.

TEACUP PAINTING ON CANVAS

To begin their teacup painting on a 16x20 inch canvas, the artists drew three consecutive circles which formed the basic shapes of a saucer, teacup and tea.   Multiple coats of paint were applied to the negative space to create a sense of depth with color, value and texture.

The artist then applied the same painting process to their teacups and saucers.  Once finished the girls applied shadows and added a flower to the negative space, then they let me snap a picture of them standing by their paintings -

Feet stepping in as the artistic signature :)

FINALLY ~

CUPCAKES!!!

On the last day of art camp everyone takes part in our Friday feast - cracking, pouring, mixing, scooping and finally eating scrumptious cupcakes.

A huge thank you to my lovely art assistant Cabel for your very skillful help this week, and to the rest of my artists for sharing their creativity and joy.

Summer Art Camp

Tea Party Art

Another week of creative girl time ~

NO BOYS ALLOWED

making art, baking cupcakes and forsaking the boys.

 POTTERY

 CLAY CAKE

This is the first summer I've moved my art class out onto the front porch and I don't know why it took me so long ~ especially when clay is involved.  We create, make a mess, enjoy the fresh air, then the porch is hosed off with a little water.   Simple, yet effective.  Hello brain, where have you been?!

Hand drawn shape patterns applied over a slab of rolled out clay and cut out with pencils formed the foundation of the artists cake design.  Left over clay was cut, rolled, scored, slipped and squished on top much like fondant icing.

Cake shapes were set aside to dry and fired in my kiln to a bisque ware state.  Afterwards the girls used a pencil and pottery glaze colors to create shapes, lines and patterns.  The cakes were "cooked" once again in my kiln.  With a saw tooth hanger attached to the back the cakes are ready to add a splash of color to a kitchen, bedroom or playroom wall.

TEACUP AND SAUCER

The artists next pottery project was to produce a teacup design on bisque ware, once again thinking about the elements and principles of art ~ line, shape, color, pattern and harmony.

Glazed and fired teacups ready for our end of the week tea party.

ACRYLIC PAINTING

Teacup on 16x20 inch Canvas

As in shown on the chalkboard and on the artists canvas, three consecutive circles, drawn in pencil, formed the basic shape of a teacup.   To create color, value and soft texture the girls layered multiple coats of paint to the background - then applied the same process to their teacups and saucers.

The compositions were finished with complimentary colored shadows and a one stemmed rose curving around the teacup.

WOODEN TEA POT

Our final art project was to develop a whimsical design on a pre-cut wooden teapot which were painted with acrylics and set aside to decorate our tea party table.

CUPCAKES

Always the weekly highlight and a much deserved treat for hardworking artists!!

Thumbs up and cherrio girls until next time.

Summer Art Camp

Two little girls celebrate summer with an artful tea party

WORKING WITH CLAY

The artists at work creating a plate from a slab of rolled out clay placed on top of paper plates then pressed into shape with water wet fingers.

The girls used cookie cutters to cut out a cupcake and crown from leftover clay scraps.  The two shapes were attached to the plate by a process of slipping and scoring.

Once joined the plates were set aside to dry before getting fired in my kiln.

The first firing removed all water from the clay producing a white bisque plate upon which the girls drew and painted their designs with lead-free, non-toxic pottery glaze.  The plates were fired once again.

Glazed and fired handmade pottery plates and hand painted tea cups.

TEA CUP PAINTING ON CANVAS

Onto a 16x20 inch canvas the artists formed a tea cup outline by sketching three concentric circles, a very simplistic design perfect for painting.  A color, pink of course, was chosen for the background.

Once the background was finished, texture, depth and interest were created in the negative space through the addition of a lighter paint color.  This same process was used to paint the concentric circles of the saucer and tea cup design.

A curved line was drawn around the plate; to this line leaves and a few simple circles were added for rose buds.  Once again paint was layered to create interest and depth.

 TREASURE BOX

CLOTH TEA NAPKIN

Our last two projects were a painted wooden treasure box and a cloth dinner napkin.  Both painted with acrylic paint.

CUPCAKE TIME

And week four of summer art camp comes to a close with happy faces and very delighted tummies.
