Water Ballet

Tandem Surfing at the 2012 E.C.S.C.

Two surfers perform a beautiful combination of ballet and gymnastics during the 50th anniversary of the East Coast Surfing Championships tandem surfing competition. For this particular ride, the surfer road the wave all the way to shore and walked off the board still carrying his partner. It was a site to behold and one that helped the tandem partners secure a place on the platform and in the hearts of the crowd.

So glad I was able to actually capture this image without another photographer, child or surfer walking in front of me just as I was ready to take the picture!

Beach Games

Guarding our shores

A little bit of summer fun after a day spent serving and saving finds Virginia beach lifeguards enjoying a game of tug-o-war.  Left unseen on the other end is an additional group of guards pulling just as hard.

Beach bikes and bathing suits

An impressionist backyard view of a group of seaside bikers, bathers and swimmers enjoying a lovely day at the beach as a distant ship passes by on the horizon.

Enjoy Summer

On my walk yesterday afternoon I decided to take a detour off of the boardwalk.  I was curious to see what our town might look like through the eyes of a tourist.  So, with i-phone camera in hand, I headed down the strip - past souvenir shops, ice cream parlors, restaurants, bars and drug stores.

I had one of those double-take, "You've got to be kidding me" moments when I saw these two signs hanging in the window of a souvenir shop. Really?  Beer, wine, food, coca-cola - are these seriously the ingredients to an enjoyable summer?!  As I continued my walk I knew I had to amend this discrepancy with my own little take on the subject.

BIKE, SURF, WALK, DRINK
I think these four words more adequately describe how one might truly enjoy summer .
Be healthy, be active, have fun.

Summer Sunset

My husband and I have been taking advantage of having both of our children home before my son makes his big move down to Charleston, S.C. for real life after college.  One of our families long time favorite activities is an end of the day bike ride along the boardwalk.  As the four of us rode down the beach last week I caught this shot of the sun setting behind one of our local amusement parks.   With our son heading south later this week, I felt this image appropriately captured my husband and my need to fill our gloaming days together with as much family activity as possible.  Although I'm super sad to have him seven hours away, I'm beyond thrilled to have another excuse to visit one of my favorite cities!  Roadtrip anyone?!

Aftermath of the Three Day Nor'Easter

Virginia Beach Boardwalk

Life is finally back to normal a few days after the disastrous
visit and departure of the November Nor'Easter. We were
truly fortunate ~ no flooding, trees down, or property damage ~
and our 21st anniversary dinner had just finished cooking when
our electricity went out! Forcing us to have a romantic dinner by
candle light as the wind and rain caused havoc around us.

One of the main roads in our neighborhood that
normally has standing water during high tide -
but never anything close to this much water.
This car still had its 30 day tags!!

The bay water, near where we take out our kayak.
This tide would save us a trek through the sand!

A little further up the road, the bay water crossed the
street and is lapping at the garage door of this home.

Pine straw and high tides = a lovely clean up for
these home owners.

My daughter, looking in amazement at the flooded
land and road.

Mailbox acting as a high tide marker.

The downed tree which caused so many homes
to loose their electricity.

Good riddance wind, rain, and high tides.
